How does a hot water heat pump work?

A hot water heat pump system comprises of a water storage tank and a heat pump. The heat pump extracts heat from the air (even on cold days) and transfers it – using a heat exchanger – to heat water in the storage tank. It works on the sample principles as a refrigerator, only in reverse.
