⚡ Important Update for Victorian Homeowners Considering a Battery in 2026

As interest continues to grow in home battery storage and electrification, many Victorian households are preparing to take advantage of the Cheaper Home Battery Program and the federal Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) rebate.

However, it is important for homeowners to be aware of an upcoming change that will directly affect the price of new solar and battery installations from 1 January 2026.

The federal STC rebate will decrease by approximately 10% at the start of the new year. This reduction applies nationwide and impacts every homeowner installing a new battery system or upgrading their solar system after 31 December 2025.

Importantly, this reduction will apply even if another company has “locked in” a price for you. The rebate is calculated at the time of installation, not at the time of purchase.

How the Rebate Reduction Works

The rebate amount decreases each year as the federal scheme phases down. From 1 January 2026, homeowners will receive a smaller rebate, which increases the total out-of-pocket cost of a battery installation.

Below is a clear breakdown of what this means:

Battery Size 2025 Rebate 2026 Rebate Extra Cost If Installed in 2026
10 kWh $3,720 $3,360 +$360
20 kWh $7,440 $6,720 +$720
30 kWh $11,160 $10,080 +$1,080
40 kWh $14,880 $13,440 +$1,440
50 kWh $18,600 $16,800 +$1,800

As shown above, the cost difference becomes more significant with larger battery sizes, and for many homes, this will represent a substantial price increase.

To secure the higher rebate, your battery must be fully installed by 31 December 2025.

Why This Matters for Homeowners

With the rebate decreasing and demand rising, the remainder of 2025 is expected to become very busy across the solar and electrification industry.

Many households will rush to secure installation dates before the end of December, and installation slots may become limited as we approach the deadline.

By planning ahead now, homeowners can avoid the year-end rush and maximise their savings under the 2025 rebate structure.
