What made you decide to get solar and battery system provided by Specialized Solar and Electrical?
My name is Paul Dimmock and I decided to install REC solar panels and a Sungrow inverter/battery configuration for three main reasons: financial savings, increased energy independence, and environmental benefits.
Financial Savings
This was my most significant purchasing driver. Solar panels generate “free” electricity from the sun, which from commencement drastically reduced my monthly electricity bill.
I worked through my ROI costings with Specialized Solar Rep, Nathan Wright and we identified a battery would take my savings further. Without a battery, my excess solar energy not used is sent back to the grid for a small credit, called a feed-in tariff. My battery lets me store the excess energy for use later, such as at night when the sun isn’t shining. Since the electricity you buy from the grid is almost always more expensive than what you earn from a feed-in tariff, we identified using my own stored energy is a more efficient way to save money.
Energy Independence and Security
Solar with a battery provides me a buffer against grid instability. While a standard solar panel system shuts down during a power outage to protect utility workers, my system with the battery is designed to “island” my home. This means it disconnects from the grid and continues to power my essential appliances like the lights and refrigerator. This provides a sense of security, especially in my area which has frequent blackouts.
Additionally, generating and storing my own power reduced my reliance on a centralized grid. It all helps to avoid higher electricity rates during peak-demand hours.
Environmental Impact
By using solar power, you’re directly reducing your reliance on fossil fuels, which are the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity sector. Installing a battery to store and use more of my own solar energy doubles down on this benefit, ensuring that less of your home’s electricity comes from the grid. This is a powerful way to reduce your personal carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner energy future
How has the solar system changed your electricity bills or energy use?
Reduced Reliance on the Grid and Lower Bills:
• Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, which you can use to power your home and appliances. This reduces the amount of electricity I need to buy from my utility company.
• The more self-consumption solar energy I use directly in my home, the more I save on my bill. This is why it’s often recommended to use large appliances like washing machines, dishwashers during the day when your panels are producing power. I now run my pool filter during the day.
Earning Credits through Net Metering:
• When my solar panels generate more electricity than I am using, the excess is sent back to the power grid.
Impact of Solar Batteries:
• I store the excess solar energy in my battery for later use. This is particularly useful for powering my home at night or during a power outage.
• By using stored solar energy, I further reduce my reliance on the grid and avoid drawing electricity when prices are at their peak.
Factors Affecting My Savings: The amount I save overall on my electricity bill with my solar system depended on several factors:
• System Size: The larger the system, the more electricity it will generate.
• Energy Consumption: If your household uses a lot of energy, a well-sized solar system can lead to substantial savings.
• Location and Weather: The amount of sunlight we receive affects how much energy my panels produce. Seasonal and weather variations e.g, cloudy days does impact my energy production.
• Utility Rates and Tariffs: The cost of electricity from the grid and the “feed-in tariff” I receive for exporting energy back to the grid plays a crucial role in my overall savings.
• Energy Habits: Changing my habits to use more energy during the day when my panels are active is maximizing my savings.
In summary, my solar energy system transforms my electricity bills by allowing me to generate my own power, reduce my grid consumption, and even earn credits for excess energy. While there is an initial investment, I am already seeing my long-term savings will be significant.
For me, the benefits of a solar energy system are primarily financial and environmental. They include reduced electricity costs, a positive impact on the environment, and an increase in home value.
What have you enjoyed most about having the solar system so far?
Financial Benefits
My most immediate benefit is the significant savings on my electricity bill. By generating my own power, I reduce my reliance on the grid, which leads to a substantial drop in my monthly utility expenses. My solar system can produce more energy than my household needs. This excess power is sold back to my utility company through a “feed-in tariff” program, which create an additional source of income or bill credits. Furthermore, solar panels do increase a home’s value.
Environmental Benefits
Solar energy is a renewable and clean energy source that helps reduce my carbon footprint.
Unlike traditional electricity generation from fossil fuels, solar panels don’t produce air pollutants or greenhouse gases when operating. This helps to reduce air and water pollution and mitigate the effects of climate change. It also lessens the strain on finite natural resources like coal and natural gas.
Other Advantages
• Low Maintenance: Solar panel systems are durable and have no moving parts that can wear out. They require minimal maintenance, mainly just occasional cleaning to ensure optimal performance.
• Energy Independence: Having a solar system with battery storage can provide power during a grid outage, offering a layer of energy independence and security.
• Government Incentives: Our local governments provide very attractive buying incentives like rebates or grants to encourage solar adoption, which I found significantly reduced the initial startup cost of my installation.
How was your experience working with our team at Specialized Solar and Electrical from start to finish?
Working with my solar team was an experience that’s both professional and personal, transforming a complex project into a smooth, satisfying journey. From the very first consultation to the moment my panels were activated, my top-notch team made feel like a partner, not just a customer. I never purchase on cheapest price only and based on my established daily system requirements, I was happy to signoff.
The Initial Consultation and Design
It all started when I attended a Specialized Solar and Electrical company presentation to gain a clear understanding of solar technology. I had been trying to understand the technology for 18 months but it was always very confusing, thus I never purchased. Attending the presentation was a significant turning point for me followed by a visit to my home. Instead of a high-pressure sales pitch, the best teams begin with a genuine conversation. They listen to your motivations—whether it’s saving money, reducing your carbon footprint, or gaining energy independence.
They walk your property with a keen eye, assessing the roof’s angle, the amount of sunlight, and any potential shading from trees or surrounding buildings. They then use sophisticated software to model a custom solar array for your home, showing you a detailed simulation of how the system will look and perform. This includes a clear breakdown of costs, potential savings, and available incentives based on your own ROI numbers. There are no hidden fees or complex jargon; everything is transparent and easy to understand. This best describes the style of Partner I wished to work with.
The Installation
Once the final design is approved, the installation phase begins. A great team arrives on time, and the crew is professional, courteous, and respectful of my property. They work efficiently and safely, taking care to minimize disruption to my daily life. You’ll see them working with a quiet focus, each person knowing their role, from the electricians wiring the system to the technicians mounting the panels. They’re also proactive in their communication, giving me updates on their progress throughout the day and letting me know what to expect next. They handle all the intricate details, from navigating local permitting to coordinating with the utility company.
The Final Steps and Activation
The final part of the process is the most exciting. After the installation is complete, a member of the team walked me through the finished system. They explained how the inverter works, how to read my new smart meter, and how to use the monitoring app on my phone. This app becomes your window into your solar power, allowing you to see your energy production in real time.
The moment the switch is flipped and the sun’s energy begins powering your home is truly special. A great team makes sure this moment is a celebration—the culmination of a well-executed project. They don’t just leave you with the new technology; they make sure you’re comfortable and confident using it.
A great solar team delivers more than just panels on a roof; they provide a seamless, educational, and empowering experience. They treat the entire project with the professionalism and care it deserves, leaving you not only with a high-performing solar system but also with the peace of mind that you made a wise and sustainable investment.
I highly recommend and endorse Specialized Solar and Electrical to be a company you should consider. 12 months down the track, my experiences with my chosen team has been seamless.
